Scientists have unveiled two chemical compounds that keep the sking young, indicating that they help it stay intact by stimulating cell competition which boosts tissue fitness and eliminates weak cells.
The research, published in the journal Nature, focused on ways to stimulate the protein known as COL17A1 which depletes with age, and, consequently, allow weaker cells to replicate.
Scientists involved in the study examined whether they could find compounds that could trigger the anti-ageing process in skin. Two components were brought into relief: Y27632 and apocynin.
"Application of these drugs to full-thickness skin wounds significantly promoted wound repair," the study said, adding that the two compounds facilitate skin regeneration and reduce skin ageing.
