Gemayel Stresses State Sovereignty, Rule of Law in Meeting with IDU Honorary Chairman

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel met on Tuesday with Lord Michael Ashcroft, honorary chairman of the International Democracy Union (IDU), at the party’s headquarters in Saifi.

The meeting focused on the latest regional developments and their implications for Lebanon amid ongoing political shifts across the Middle East. The two sides held an in-depth discussion on opportunities for the Lebanese State to fully restore its sovereignty and strengthen its ties with both its regional neighbors and the broader international community.

The talks also addressed the role of the Kataeb Party within the International Democracy Union, a global alliance of center-right political parties. Both sides emphasized the importance of coordinating with sovereignist and reform-oriented forces internationally, saying such collaboration is key to reinforcing Lebanon’s position as a free, independent state built on strong institutions and international legitimacy.

Gemayel highlighted the importance of international partnerships in supporting Lebanon’s path toward reform and sovereignty. He stressed that the coming phase requires a clear vision and a firm commitment to the principle that weapons must be held exclusively by the state, alongside efforts to build a government fully governed by the rule of law.

The meeting was attended by political adviser Aliona Hlivco and Marwan Abdallah, head of the Kataeb Party’s Foreign Affairs Department and vice president of the IDU.
