Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel on Saturday rejected any attempt to classify weapons in Lebanon as heavy, medium, or light, arguing that such distinctions are meaningless and undermine the state’s ability to assert full sovereignty.
“If heavy weapons pose a threat to Lebanon’s political and regional security, then light weapons are even more dangerous to the process of state-building," Gemayel said in a statement posted on X.
The comments come amid ongoing national debate over disarmament, following reports that Hezbollah may be willing to hand over its heavy weaponry in exchange for security guarantees and post-conflict reconstruction.
“We want a Lebanon free of all weapons held by anyone, in any part of the country,” he said. “Only the army and legitimate security forces have the right to bear arms.”
