Gemayel Meets Maronite Patriarch, Calls on Lebanese to Flood Streets for Pope’s Visit

Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel, accompanied by MP Salim Sayegh, met with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi in Bkirki on Friday to discuss recent developments in Lebanon.

Following the meeting, Gemayel described the visit as “pleasant,” reflecting the festive atmosphere surrounding Pope Leo XIV’s historic visit.

“We came to check on the preparations and to place ourselves and the Kataeb Party at the Maronite Patriarchate's disposal for this occasion,” he said.

Gemayel called on all Lebanese to take part in welcoming the Pope, emphasizing that the country should be ready and that Christians and all citizens should be present to send a message of openness, peace, love, and stability.

“Lebanon’s goal is to live in peace, turn the page on bloodshed and tears, and build a nation where citizens can enjoy the stability they deserve after 60 years of crises and wars,” he said.

He expressed hope that the papal visit would close a chapter of exhaustion and open a bright new one for the country, helping Lebanon reclaim its status as the “Switzerland of the East” and a model for the region.

“We look forward to the Pope’s visit, his words, and his message. We must prepare to welcome him and be out in force on the roads in Annaya, Bkirki, Beirut, and at all organized events. This is not the time to participate from in front of televisions. We need to be on the streets during the three days of his visit to show the world that Lebanon has a vibrant Christian presence and a people full of life. This must be visible on the roads,” he said.

When asked about political matters, Gemayel said: “I will not speak about politics today. Let’s focus on the Papal visit, and we will address other issues fully afterward. But anyone who is not concerned about the situation is naïve.”
