Gemayel: Election of President Key to Resolving Countries Problems

Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel pointed out that Hezbollah would continue controlling the country, the institutions, and the economy, affirming that he supports the traditional logic of confrontation and moving to a new phase.

“I play a major role in gathering the opposition that had agreed on a non-provocative presidential candidate. However, the other party has not had any intention of electing a president as it rejected Former Minister Jihad Azour and supported Marada Movement Leader Sleiman Frangieh,” Gemayel said in an interview with LBCI.

The Kataeb Leader affirmed that his party had never rejected any invitation for dialogue.

“We, as the Kataeb Party, are advocates of dialogue. However, the proposals made to us are to obstruct and impose, which is not a form of democracy but rather a form of imposition,” he noted.

Gemayel believed that the influence of illegal weapons over the state and its institutions makes the dialogue unbalanced.

"As a Lebanese citizen, my dignity is violated because of a party that kidnapped my state and tries to involve me in policies that I do not agree with,” he noted.

He also considered that the issue of partnership with Hezbollah should be raised if it insists on its policies, explaining that “we are talking about a divorce of all Lebanese with the party, not just Christians, because everyone is affected by Hezbollah's actions”.

“Raising the issue of partnership with Hezbollah means that we will not continue on the same path with it, meaning that we can resort to civil disobedience and financial disobedience. We must create a balance with this party because we cannot remain hostages and victims,” he emphasized.

He stressed that no one would save the Lebanese except themselves.

“We will not be afraid to save our country as long as we have a plan,” he affirmed.

Regarding the issue of Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh, he said: "I am against the government appointing a new governor for the Central Bank. The solution is to elect a president.”

“Is the logic of extending the term of Riad Salameh really being proposed?” he asked.

“He is wanted by dozens of countries, including his own. He carried out the largest Ponzi scheme and hid all the figures and the reality of the Central Bank from the Lebanese and lied to them,” he indicated.

Gemayel pointed out that the Minister of Finance could send the first report on the forensic audit to the Parliament according to the contract, but if he does not send it, it is his decision, asking: "Can the Minister of Finance explain to us why he hid the report?"

“Security threats have not stopped and I know that free voices in Lebanon always pay the price. Pierre Gemayel, Samir Kassir, Gebran Tueini and all the martyrs who fell paid the price for their stances. I hope that we do not know return to the cycle of assassinations,” he concluded.
