Lebanon’s parliament convened Tuesday for a legislative session to review draft laws and proposals on its agenda.

At the start of the session, Kataeb Party leader MP Samy Gemayel called on Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to convene a special meeting to debate the war in Lebanon.

Gemayel questioned why the conflict has not yet been debated in parliament, describing the legislature as the country’s highest constitutional institution.

A separate clash erupted between Gemayel and Hezbollah MP Hussein Hajj Hassan after the latter criticized the government’s performance. Gemayel responded by calling on Hezbollah ministers to withdraw from the government if they were dissatisfied with its decisions and policies.

Meanwhile, MTV reported that Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Defense Minister Michel Menassa were involved in a heated argument over the proposed general amnesty bill.

According to the report, the dispute centered on Menassa’s wish to deliver a statement outlining the Lebanese Army’s position on the amnesty issue. Salam, however, reportedly maintained that the prime minister is the only person entitled to express the government’s position.
