Gemayel Calls on Government to Scrap Electoral Law Article Restricting Expat Votes

Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel on Wednesday called on the government to abolish Article 112 of Lebanon’s electoral law, which reserves only six parliamentary seats for non-resident voters, and urged it to guarantee expatriates the right to vote for all 128 members of Parliament.

Gemayel said his party has consistently opposed the current law and pushed for reform, noting a 2018 bill that sought to remove the six reserved seats and expand voting rights for Lebanese abroad.

He highlighted recent political actions by the Kataeb, including the withdrawal of the Justice Minister from a Cabinet session on September 16, 2025, after his request to pass such a law was rejected, and the Kataeb parliamentary bloc’s walkout from a Parliament session on September 29, 2025, which contributed to the loss of quorum.

“Yesterday, our political team stood firm against the neglect of expatriates’ rights, taking another step on the long path the Kataeb Party has been forging,” Gemayel wrote on X.

He called on the Cabinet to move quickly to secure expatriates’ voting rights, stressing that “the road ahead is long and full of obstacles, but our commitment and determination are far stronger.”
