Gemayel Calls for State Monopoly on Arms, Return of Displaced Syrians in Talks with French Envoy

Kataeb Party leader MP Samy Gemayel met on Wednesday with French Ambassador to Lebanon Hervé Magro for talks that centered on the latest political and security developments in the country, with a particular focus on the ongoing municipal elections, the ceasefire agreement, and and the growing concerns over the prolonged presence of displaced Syrians in Lebanon.

The meeting, held at the Kataeb's headquarters in Saifi, was also attended by MP Nadim Gemayel, Political Bureau member Joelle Bou Abboud, and Marwan Abdallah, Head of the Kataeb Party’s Foreign Affairs Department.

Discussions touched on the importance of holding municipal elections as a means to restore democratic life in Lebanon after years of political gridlock. The elections, they said, offer Lebanese citizens a chance to reclaim their role in decision-making through the ballot box and to restore public confidence in democratic institutions.

The ceasefire agreement was another key topic in the meeting as participants stressed the urgent need for all weapons to be placed under the exclusive authority of the Lebanese State and its official security institutions. Gemayel emphasized that disarmament must apply to all armed groups without exception, describing this as a foundational principle for the Kataeb Party. The swift implementation of this measure, he said, is vital for enabling the Lebanese State to fully reassert its sovereignty over all national territory.

Gemayel also addressed the issue of displaced Syrians living in Lebanon, ahead of an expected visit by Syrian President Ahmad Sharaa to France, where he is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. The Kataeb chief urged that this matter be brought to the table during the upcoming  high-level talks, calling for a clear framework to regulate the status of Syrians in Lebanon and ensure their swift return home. He warned that continued inaction would only deepen the socioeconomic strain on Lebanon.
