Geagea Calls For Prompt Municipal Elections Amid Ongoing Military Operations In Southern Lebanon

Head of the Lebanese Forces Party Samir Geagea, stated that the tenure of municipal and mukhtars' councils is set to conclude by the end of May.

He acknowledged the military activities in vast regions of southern Lebanon, which hinder the electoral process there.

Geagea further expressed concern over the nation's standstill, especially considering the critical role local authorities play for the populace.

Given the law governing municipal and mukhtars' elections mandates a notice period of at least 90 days before the elections, Geagea stressed that it's imperative for the Interior Minister to officially announce the elections by the 26th of this month.

Geagea criticized the notion of using the south's military context as a pretext for prolonging the country's stagnation.

While he conceded that it might be reasonable to delay elections in areas currently affected by military actions due to unavoidable reasons, he firmly opposed the idea of forgoing municipal elections altogether.

He pointed out the dissolution of many municipal bodies and the functional standstill of others due to prolonged terms, underscoring the urgency of conducting the municipal and mukhtars' elections as planned, without further delays, despite the military challenges in some southern regions.
