Gemayel Says Goal Is to Break Hezbollah’s Monopoly on Lebanese Decision

Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel denied rumors about him promoting the name of former minister Jihad Azour, affirming that the goal is to break Hezbollah’s monopoly on the Lebanese decision.

“The Kataeb Party did not nominate anyone. I do not mediate between Samir Geagea and Gebran Bassil nor do I promote Jihad Azour. I did not visit Bassil and did not speak to him, but there is communication between us,” Gemayel said in an interview with MTV.

Gemayel indicated that the goal was for Hezbollah not to decide who is the President of Lebanon.

“Hezbollah said that it would keep disrupting until it imposes its candidate, in response, we say that we will disrupt the elections to prevent it from imposing its candidate. We will work on any loophole to confront Hezbollah and Bassil,” he affirmed.

“We will suspend the sessions to prevent Frangieh from being elected, we are in a state of confrontation, and we will not surrender to Hezbollah,” he stressed.

“We, as opposition, will use all constitutional means to break Hezbollah's monopoly,” he added.

Gemayel affirmed that the Kataeb Party rejects "equation of either hezbollah candidate or presidential vacuum".

“If this is the equation then we will definitely obstruct the session and prevent the election of Sleiman Frangieh or any other presidential candidate backed and imposed by Hezbollah,” he said.

“We are in a state of confrontation, and we will not surrender to Hezbollah,” he concluded.
