FC Barcelona is concerned that one of its main first-team stars will be banned from playing at the turn of 2025 because of issues related to his registration and Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.
Barca made Dani Olmo a marquee signing for head coach Hansi Flick in the summer transfer window, after agreeing on a deal that could surpass $60 million in value with his last club RB Leipzig.
The 26-year-old was the joint top scorer at Euro 2024 as his country Spain lifted a record fourth continental crown at England's expense in Berlin, meaning Sporting Director Deco managed to pull off a major coup by convincing Olmo's former German employers to accept payment in installments.
Such an arrangement suited Barca's well-documented FFP issues, which, once again, resulted in the build up to a new season being laden with hurdles when it came to getting new signings Olmo and Pau Victor registered.
Olmo had to wait patiently to make his debut, but did so in style by netting the winner in a 2-1 comeback win away at Rayo Vallecano on Matchday 3 of the ongoing 2024/2025 campaign.
Yet this milestone in the player's career, returning to his boyhood outfit and finally appearing for them as a professional after deciding to flee La Masia for Croatia as a youngster, was only made possible by Barca utilizing a loophole.
It used center back Andreas Christensen's long-term injury for leeway when getting Olmo and Pau Victor's registrations over the line, and the three men were promised at the time by the club that Barca would have solved its FFP issues come January.
Day by day, however, with the transfer window in said month fast approaching, Barca hasn't yet found a solution.
It expected to have agreed a new contract with kit supplier and sponsor Nike by now, while the $65 million (€60 million) mess related to Libero and a percentage stake in Barca Studios also hasn't been ironed out and accounted for.
The Blaugrana needs a cash injection from somewhere, quickly. Otherwise it might have to break its word to either Olmo or Christensen.
As SPORT explains, one of the two could be registered at the turn of the year. But not both men, as things currently stand.
