Just over a year ago, Jean Paul Gaultier held his final couture collection for his namesake label before retiring. The house moved onto a guest-designer model, which would see different couture collaborations each season.
Now, the brand has revealed that this new strategy will also be in place for the ready-to-wear collections, which are making a comeback this season.
Jean Paul Gaultier stopped doing ready-to-wear six years ago to focus on couture, but this new strategy will allow the house to release several RTW collections a year, which will be designed by guest collaborators and the in-house team.
According to WWD, the house is introducing a digital-first strategy with ready-to-wear, revealing the new collection this Friday, which will sell through the brand's new online store, and through Ssense.com. Although Gaultier is not directly in charge of designing the clothes anymore, he is still heavily linked to the company where he is contracted as an ambassador – and is particularly involved when it comes to choosing the guest designers.
"He’s still working with us on different aspects of the brand, but he didn’t want to play that role of designing the collection anymore," Antoine Gagey, Jean Paul Gaultier's general manager told WWD. "He’s still helping us, giving us some direction."
Jean Paul Gaultier's first ready-to-wear collection under this model will be revealed and able to shop from this Friday 28 May.
