Exclusive: Sayegh: Lebanese Are Held Hostages by "Blank Vote" Team

Fourth presidential elections session was held today in a “hidden democracy”, atmosphere, while the country desperately needs to elect a new Head of State, one week away from the end of President Aoun's term.

In this regard, Deputy Head of the Lebanese Kataeb Party, Lawmaker Dr. Selim Sayegh expressed his adherence to the election process instead of dialogue, especially since there are those who disrupt the sessions and hold the Lebanese hostages to their political calculations at a sensitive time.

“There is a problem with the “blank vote” team, because the opposition team, despite its diversity, managed to get nearly 62 votes, which the other team feared and pushed it to block the quorum. There is an “amputation” of the democratic process, which must stop immediately,” Sayegh said in an interview with Kataeb.org.

Regarding the completion of the sessions until the election of a president instead of disrupting the quorum after the first round, Sayegh pointed out: “They are trying to deal with the issue from outside the parliament to elect a president who is conditioned by other things, but we want a free president.”

“When the other team matures, it will know that moving to the second round is a must, and then we will be able to see a different impulse in the presidential election sessions."

In a related context, he continued: “We can disrupt the sessions, but we are waiting for all parties to resolve their internal "contradictions. The balance of power will remain the same and if it changes, it will not be in their favor. As for the Lebanese people, they are held hostages by "Blank Vote" Team.”

Regarding the possibility of reaching a “consensus” Sayegh pointed out that the Kataeb bloc “would not accept this matter, and does not want dialogue to be an alternative to election.”
