European People’s Party Backs Lebanon’s Move to Rein in Hezbollah

The European People’s Party (EPP) on Friday expressed solidarity with the Lebanese people as the country faces renewed violence linked to the escalation in the Middle East.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and with all civilians who have been displaced and are enduring the consequences of the escalation,” the EPP said in a statement.

The party, which has two Lebanese partners—the Kataeb Party and the Lebanese Forces Party—said it stands by them in their efforts to assist those most affected and forced to flee their homes.

The EPP also voiced support for the Lebanese government’s recent decision to ban Hezbollah’s military activities.

“We support efforts to achieve its disarmament in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701,” the statement said.

The party called for strong international action to restore stability and security in Lebanon, urging reinforcement of the Lebanese Armed Forces and increased pressure and sanctions on Iran and Hezbollah.
