President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed the importance of the Lebanese community in Australia as a vital cultural and economic bridge between the two countries, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support Australia has extended to Lebanon, particularly following the 2020 Beirut Port explosion.
“The special relationship between Lebanon and Australia goes beyond traditional diplomatic relations; it is a profound humanitarian bond that you, your parents, and your grandparents have created,” Aoun said in a speech delivered via video link at a ceremony in Sydney.
The event, held at the New South Wales Parliament in Sydney, was organized under the patronage of Bishop Antoine-Sharbel Tarabay, the Maronite Archbishop of Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania. It was also attended by members of the Parliamentary Friends of Lebanon Committee and the Lebanese-Australian Friendship Committee.
He emphasized the enduring connection that has transformed Australia into a “second home” for Lebanese expatriates, highlighting its role as a loyal ally, particularly in Lebanon’s most challenging moments.
He acknowledged the Australian government’s timely response in the aftermath of the Beirut blast, noting that the country continues to provide “developmental and humanitarian aid to support the Lebanese economy, educational institutions, and healthcare systems.”
“You have demonstrated exceptional ability to excel and innovate,” Aoun said, commending the Lebanese diaspora for its successes in various fields, including business, science, medicine, engineering, the arts, politics, and media. He noted that their ability to integrate into Australian society while maintaining their Lebanese identity serves as a model for others.
Looking ahead, Aoun called on the Lebanese community to intensify their engagement with Lebanon, urging them to share their expertise and support the country's rebuilding efforts.
“Today, as we face significant challenges in Lebanon, we need your support, your expertise, and your connections more than ever,” he said. “You are a true wealth for Lebanon.”
He added that the Lebanese diaspora’s contribution would be crucial in Lebanon’s journey of recovery and reconstruction, calling on the community to “participate in the journey of recovery and reconstruction that we seek to implement.”
As Lebanon navigates a period of profound crisis, including economic collapse and political deadlock, Aoun’s message was clear: the solidarity of all Lebanese, both at home and abroad, will be essential for overcoming the current challenges.
“Together, with the solidarity of all Lebanese, we will overcome challenges and build the Lebanon we all aspire to – a strong and prosperous Lebanon that honors the sacrifices and aspirations of its people,” Aoun stressed.
In his speech, Aoun also urged the Lebanese community to maintain close ties with their homeland and inspire future generations to hold fast to their Lebanese identity and culture.
“Lebanon is proud of you and your achievements, and it relies on your role in the upcoming phase,” Aoun concluded.
