Kataeb Secretary General Serge Dagher emphasized that this is the time to speak the truth, but not the time for gloating, confrontation, provocation, or accountability.
In an interview on MTV, Dagher noted that Hezbollah’s actions had given Israel a gift, saying the narrative Hezbollah had built over 15 years collapsed in just 10 days.
He said, "Hezbollah's slogan was ‘If Lebanon is struck, Iran will enter the war.’ But we haven’t seen that. Instead, we heard the Iranian president talking about negotiations with Washington, stating, ‘We are not Iraq, nor Lebanon, and we will not be a testing ground like other nations.’ Moreover, Hezbollah claimed that the Axis of Resistance countries would join the war on our side. Iraq and Syria have not entered the war, and Yemen plays a minor and rare role. They also spoke of a balance of terror, but where is the parity in intelligence, technology, casualties, or destruction?"
Dagher continued, "Hezbollah said Israel would not dare strike Beirut, the southern suburbs, or southern Lebanon, but we witnessed airstrikes hitting all of Lebanon. Has the resistance’s weaponry protected Lebanon or created this so-called balance of terror?"
He stressed that Lebanon has become a bargaining chip in Iran's hands.
"Is dignity watching our people suffer? Is this acceptable to Hezbollah?" he questioned.
Dagher added, "Hezbollah always claimed that its weapons were hidden in caves, but haven’t we seen them in homes? Where does the Radwan force gather— in caves or buildings, homes, and among civilians?"
He warned that declaring one side defeated is premature and harmful in the long term, as experience has shown.
Dagher reminded that Kataeb Party Leader MP Samy Gemayel, a day before the targeting of Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah, called for separating Lebanon’s path from the Gaza war, ceasing fire, implementing UNSC Resolution 1701, and facilitating the election of a president by reconsidering Hezbollah’s presidential candidate. "At the time, the Kataeb was accused of treason for this stance, but now those who accused us have come to say what Gemayel had said. Was it necessary to pay all these prices, kill Lebanese people, and hit Hezbollah just to reach the same conclusion?"
Regarding the meeting between House Speaker Nabih Berri, Former leader of Progressive Socialist Party Walid Jumblatt, and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Dagher commented, "I don't give the matter more importance than it deserves."
Dagher viewed Hezbollah’s voluntary decision to involve Lebanon in the war as a fundamental error, as it unilaterally decided war and peace. "We are against any ground attack. The Lebanese army defends Lebanon, and when it calls on us, we are ready."
He added, "Hezbollah allowed Israel to destroy Lebanon and enter it. We will not let anyone shame us for our position. Netanyahu was turned into a political hero. After all that has happened, do we feel embarrassed to accuse Hezbollah of dragging us into this war?"
He also confirmed that the Kataeb is working day and night to provide aid to displaced people.
Dagher stressed the need to fully implement UNSC Resolution 1701, especially adhering to UNSC Resolution 1559, underscoring the importance of extending the authority of the legitimate state across all Lebanese territories.
On the presidential elections, Dagher said that the focus now is on House Speaker Berri’s role, who has expressed readiness to call for a session to elect a president who would not provoke anyone. "This practically means abandoning Minister Sleiman Frangieh."
Dagher emphasized the priority of the president’s role, saying, "We are looking at the program the next president should carry, especially the implementation of UNSC Resolutions 1701 and 1559."
He refused to engage in a name-calling game.
Regarding a possible extension for the army commander, Dagher said, "We will not leave the military institution leaderless. We will engage in dialogue and make a decision."
He pointed out that the academic year cannot be wasted, suggesting that one possible solution might be to adopt two shifts, one before noon and one after.
He stated, "Our concern is not to break anyone or defeat any sect, but leniency does not mean we shouldn't speak the truth. From the very first day, we have said we want to live together in a country where there is equality— not first-class and second-class citizens. We must live together in a free, sovereign, democratic, and decentralized civil state with equality. But if Hezbollah continues with its current approach, we will not reach safety."
Dagher concluded by stressing that Kataeb Leader MP Samy Gemayel cannot be pressured morally, saying that the Kataeb Party is not waiting for a green light from anyone.
