Dagher Calls for a President Capable of Discussing Controversial Issues with Hezbollah

Kataeb Secretary General Serge Dagher deemed Lebanon’s current situation as a shame.

“Aoun’s term has ended with no successor. There is a government which already operates in a limited capacity, having resigned after the May 15 parliamentary elections,” Dagher pointed out asking who shall sign the government formation in the event that Mikati would form a cabinet.

“He intends to invite heads of parliamentary blocs to a national discussion, why blocking this?” Dagher said when asked about Speaker Nabih Berri’s invitation to discussion related to presidential elections.

“No one can come up with a president on his own. The March 8 camp is not able to elect a president, nor are those facing Hezbollah capable of choosing a president on their own,” he added.

“We ask Hezbollah to equally deal with the Lebanese, and to discuss its illegal weapons, constitutional mechanisms, and system development, but the question is: Hezbollah is ready or not?” Secretary General continued.

Dagher explained that If Hezbollah’s answer was yes, then Kataeb Party would enter discussions with pleasure. However, if the answer was no, Hezbollah would have chosen to continue imposing a president and government and continue smuggling.

Regarding the candidacy of Michel Mouawad, he said: “We seriously support his candidacy. He is also a friend. We share the same aspirations.”

He stressed that Kataeb Party would firmly reject the election of a president from March 8 camp, and it would work to prevent the arrival of such a president by all democratic means.

“We should agree on the election of a president who is capable of addressing controversial issues. Otherwise, Lebanon will witness more confusion the next six years,” he emphasized.

Regarding the army commander’s candidacy for the presidency, Dagher stated: “We do not know General Joseph Aoun’s positions in politics. To elect him, the basis on which we will support him must be clarified, and nothing prevents discussion with him. There is nothing against him personally. The issue is a legitimate issue.”
