Baerbock: Rising Israel-Hezbollah Tensions Risk 'Disastrous' Middle East War

The escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah could lead to a war with “disastrous consequences” for the entire Middle East, Germany’s foreign minister warned on Tuesday.

“With every rocket over the Blue Line, the danger grows that the situation will get out of control, the danger grows that a miscalculation will trigger a hot war. All those who bear responsibility must therefore exercise the utmost restraint, and, above all, Hezbollah must stop firing at Israel,” Annalena Baerbock told reporters after meeting with Israeli officials in Jerusalem, voicing concern that the situation could spiral out of control in the coming days and weeks.

“We all want to prevent a war between Lebanon and Israel because it would have devastating consequences for both countries, devastating consequences for the region, but also devastating consequences for all of us in the international community. The region would be threatened by a conflagration, and it is precisely this conflagration that we must prevent together,” she said.

Later during the day, Baerbock headed to Beirut where she met with Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Following the meeting held at the Grand Serail, the German FM reiterated that the situation along the Blue Line is delicate and risks persist, outlining the need for cooperation among all parties in order to de-escalate tensions and achieve a ceasefire in Gaza that would reflect a definitive cessation of hostilities in South Lebanon.

Baerbock also held talks with her Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib with whom she discussed the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis.

"We will therefore provide another 18 million euros for humanitarian aid,  specifically for food, accommodation and doctors," she said in the statement.
