Army Conducts Series of Raids in Wake of Embassy Attack

The Lebanese Army on Tuesday conducted a series of raids in the towns of Majdal Anjar and Al-Suwayri after it was revealed that the perpetrator of the attack on the U.S. embassy resides in the area, sources told Kataeb.org.

The Lebanese Army later issued a statement saying that it has arrested a Syrian national and another Lebanese one, as well as three members of the perpetrator's family.

The National News Agency also reported that the State Security Directorate in Bekaa, in coordination with the Army intelligence, arrested the brother of the shooter who attacked the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. The detainee is reported to be a Syrian national.

The agency further noted that another man, who is suspected of being also involved in the attack, was also arrested after he had sought refuge with one of the region’s influential figures.

Two men, one of whom is a Syrian cleric who reportedly gave the attacker religious teachings, were also arrested, Al Jadeed TV channel reported, citing a security source.

Annahar correspondent reported that the shooter, identified as Kais Faraj, a Syrian national residing in Al-Suwayri. The Information Branch is currently interrogating his father following the brother's arrest. The correspondent added that the shooter underwent surgery at a military hospital, where he claimed his actions were in support of Gaza.

A Lebanese security official earlier told The Associated Press there were four assailants, including one who drove the gunmen to the site and three who opened fire, and some local media also reported multiple suspects, but official accounts mentioned only one shooter and videos from the scene showed security forces engaging with only one person.

The motive wasn't immediately clear, but Lebanese media published photos that appear to show a bloodied attacker wearing a black vest with the words "Islamic State" written in Arabic and the English initials "I" and "S." ISIS is also known as the Islamic State.
