Countering Hezbollah’s Reconstruction Politics and the Council for South Lebanon
In recent weeks, U.S. policy toward Lebanon has been narrowly focused on the process of disarming Iran-backed Hezbollah, as called for in the June trilateral framework agreement. Less attention has been paid to postwar reconstruction, another critical element of the agreement. Early indications suggest that Beirut’s current approach to this undertaking could wind up strengthening rather than marginalizing Hezbollah, since the government is apparently relying on the Council for South Lebanon (CSL)—an institution closely associated with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, the head of the Amal Party and Hezbollah’s chief political ally—to manage much of the process.

Aoun Meets Salam: Discussion on the Results of His Foreign Visit and Living Conditions
President Joseph Aoun received Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam this afternoon at the Baabda Palace, and was briefed on the results of his visit to New York and Washington, and the positive discussions he held with several American and international officials, which addressed the situation in Lebanon and the region.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also informed the President about the atmosphere of his tour earlier today in the Nabatieh region, and the meetings he held with officials and citizens, which addressed the needs of the region's residents.
The two presidents discussed the steps that need to be taken to address living and daily life issues, and the measures approved by the Cabinet in its session yesterday.
