Last week, Israeli aircraft bombed the Abu Al Duhur air base in Syria. The Israelis initially failed to admit responsibility for the attack, but to a number of observers it was very reminiscent of the attacks in April last year against the Hama and T4 air bases. At the time, these were interpreted as an Israeli effort to prevent the Turkish military from using the bases, amid the rising regional rivalry between Israel and Turkey.

The impasse in Lebanon is about Hezbollah’s weapons, and for that there is no military solution, either by Israel or through the Lebanese Armed Forces. External support and external factors will always be important, but it is ultimately an internal matter among the Lebanese. The definitive test of the Lebanese political system is whether it can resolve this politically. The challenge is whether Hezbollah can to be convinced to give up its arms and connections with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and voluntarily join the Taif agreement that ended the civil war in 1989. Otherwise, the peace talks with Israel will go nowhere and the scenarios for everyone in the region are too horrible to imagine.

President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed on Monday that Lebanon will not serve as a platform for attacks against any country, particularly the brotherly Arab nations, as he met with a delegation of Arab ambassadors based in Beirut.
“We hope for the support of Arab nations so that Lebanon may once again be the Arabs’ gateway to the Arab world, as the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, used to say,” Aoun told the envoys.
The Lebanese president warned that the consequences of ongoing regional conflicts extend beyond the Palestinian people, affecting all Arab states, including Lebanon. He stressed the need for a unified Arab stance to confront the mounting challenges facing the region.
