Lebanese President Joseph Aoun welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, expressing hope that it will bring an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Aoun acknowledged the importance of the international community’s efforts in brokering the deal and stressed the significance of the global push for peace in the region.
However, Aoun raised concerns about Israel’s adherence to the terms of the agreement, urging that careful monitoring by the international community, particularly the United Nations and the countries facilitating the deal, is essential given Israel’s track record of evading its obligations and disregarding international resolutions. Aoun specifically referenced recent attacks and ceasefire violations in southern Lebanon as evidence of Israel’s ongoing failure to meet its commitments.
Reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to a sovereign state in accordance with international law, Aoun emphasized that the successful implementation of the agreement could pave the way for the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes. Additionally, he highlighted the urgent need for the reconstruction of Gaza, calling for international efforts to rebuild what has been destroyed by the ongoing conflict.
President Aoun concluded his statement by calling for a continued international effort to hold Israel accountable, and to ensure that the ceasefire agreement translates into genuine steps toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
