The people of Lebanon are marking five years since the Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020 – a blast that has been described as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. The detonation pulverised the port, ruined vast sections of the city and was felt as far away as Cyprus. It also claimed the lives of more than 220 people, injured more than 7,000 more and left more than 300,000 homeless.

August 4 will mark the fifth anniversary of the Beirut port explosion that killed more than 200 people, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever. The families of the victims are still awaiting justice. Earlier this year the magistrate investigating the tragedy, Tariq Bitar, resumed his investigation, which had been suspended after politicians repeatedly intervened to derail it.

Kataeb lawmaker Selim Sayegh stressed that his party’s presence in Dimane yesterday was to affirm that it is entrusted with dignity and sanctity of human life, saying that it will serve Lebanon no matter what.
Sayegh stressed the importance of a comprehensive popular mobilization whether on the spiritual, political or national level in a bid to defend the Lebanese entity, recalling the bill submitted by the Kataeb party proposing the amendment of the Military Tribunal Law.
“We have reached the point of no return in this fateful confrontation. The Kataeb party and the Lebanese Forces agree on Bkerke’s principles,” he concluded.
