Israeli warplanes struck the western ridges of Lebanon’s mountains in the Hermel region on Monday, hitting areas in the Bekaa plain and the outskirts of the towns of Halabta and Harbata, near the Nabi Musa shrine, as well as Zaghrine and Sharbine, according to local reports.

Lebanon’s government is facing mounting challenges. It is trying to balance the demands of the US to disarm Hezbollah, a militia and political party controlling much of the country, against those of Iran, Hezbollah’s main sponsor, to do no such thing. For a government that took power only recently after years of political vacuum, as well as for the country as a whole, this is a critical test of sovereignty.

The Ambassadors of the five-nation group on Lebanon, which comprises the U.S., France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt, will meet Wednesday at the U.S. embassy in Awkar, the Nidaa al-Watan newspaper said.
The daily said U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson will head the meeting.
Crisis-hit Lebanon has been without a president since Michel Aoun's term ended in October 2022, with neither of the two main blocs -- Hezbollah and its opponents -- having the majority required to elect one.
The international community and the five-nation group have long urged Lebanese leaders to end months of political wrangling and stem the financial meltdown.
