Lebanon and Syria have agreed to set up new mechanisms to strengthen coordination, including the creation of two committees tasked with following up on sensitive judicial and security issues, the Lebanese Justice Ministry said on Tuesday.

Israeli warplanes struck the western ridges of Lebanon’s mountains in the Hermel region on Monday, hitting areas in the Bekaa plain and the outskirts of the towns of Halabta and Harbata, near the Nabi Musa shrine, as well as Zaghrine and Sharbine, according to local reports.

Lebanon’s government is facing mounting challenges. It is trying to balance the demands of the US to disarm Hezbollah, a militia and political party controlling much of the country, against those of Iran, Hezbollah’s main sponsor, to do no such thing. For a government that took power only recently after years of political vacuum, as well as for the country as a whole, this is a critical test of sovereignty.

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson at his residence in Tripoli on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by MPs Faisal Karami, Ashraf Rifi, Ahmad Kheir, Haidar Nasser, Ihab Matar, Taha Naji, Karim Kabbara, and Jamil Abboud, along with a delegation from the U.S. Embassy and Mikati’s advisor, Ziad Mikati.
Discussions focused on the overall situation in Lebanon, with particular attention to Tripoli and northern Lebanon.
The talks also addressed the outcomes of Ambassador Johnson’s recent city tour.
