Democratic Gathering Bloc Backs Joseph Aoun for President

The Democratic Gathering bloc announced the need to elect a president in the session scheduled for January 9, expressing its support for the election of Army Commander General Joseph Aoun as president.

The bloc emphasized the need to implement the ceasefire agreement reached on November 27 and to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, as well as other international resolutions and the Taif Agreement, especially about the armistice.

It condemned the ongoing Israeli violations of the ceasefire resolution and urged the committee overseeing its implementation to take the necessary actions to halt Israel's breaches.

Additionally, the bloc highlighted the importance of developing plans to begin reconstruction efforts in the south, Beirut's southern suburbs, and the Bekaa.

It also reminded of the Paris conference convened by President Emmanuel Macron, which endorsed a €1 billion aid package for Lebanon and the Lebanese army, underscoring the critical need to support both the army and security forces.
