Advancing Circular Economy Practices in Lebanon's Industrial Sector

Since 2019, the MED TEST III project has aimed to tackle resource challenges and foster a circular economy approach within Lebanon's industries.

Led by UNIDO in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry (MoI) and the Ministry of Environment (MoE), along with industry associations, the project has showcased promising outcomes from pilot initiatives promoting resource-efficient production methods.

It has stressed the integration of circular economy principles into industrial operations, targeting key sectors like food, beverages, and chemicals, as well as related segments such as plastics and printing.

Through industry demonstrations, the project identified and implemented measures for resource efficiency, potentially leading to significant environmental benefits and annual cost savings of approximately €3.4 million.

The project's efforts have been endorsed by stakeholders, including UNIDO and the European Union, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and circular business models for Lebanon's economic recovery.

Industry representatives and government officials have highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives on reducing operating costs, improving production processes, and enhancing environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, innovative solutions like the whey valorization initiative in the dairy sector demonstrate the project's ability to foster market innovation and competitiveness while promoting sustainability within the industry.
