Venezuela’s government on Thursday banned opposition leader, Juan Guaido, from running for public office for 15 years.
The announcement was made by state comptroller Elvis Amoroso, appointed by President Nicolas Maduro, via state broadcaster VTV.
Amoroso accused Guaido of contradictions in his personal financial disclosures, saying that the latter has been accepting gifts from foreign governments.
He also claimed that Guaido has been staying in luxurious hotels in the country and abroad, without stating who is funding his costly accommodations.
"He is not auditor general.... The legitimate congress is the only one with power to designate an auditor general," Guaido said as he hit back at Amoroso.
“All usurped authority is ineffective and its acts are nullified,” a spokesperson for Guaido, Edward Rodriguez, told CNN, elaborating that only the country's judiciary is allowed to take such a decision.
