Several Western governments continue to support a proposal to deploy limited U.S. military forces in Lebanon to oversee the process of confining weapons exclusively to the state, Kuwait’s Al-Jarida newspaper reported, citing Western diplomatic sources.
According to the proposal, the U.S. troops would be stationed at military bases outside southern Lebanon, while maintaining the option to conduct patrols in areas considered Hezbollah strongholds near the border with Israel.
Diplomatic sources added that a number of European countries are also seriously considering deploying their own troops to Lebanon, either under the banner of a multinational force or through another framework, once the plan gains broader approval.
The idea has gained new momentum following the UN Security Council’s recent agreement to end the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) by the end of 2026, with a gradual reduction of its activities before a full withdrawal.
