U.S. Weighs Sanctions Against Lebanese Security and Military Officials Over Explosives Case

The United States is preparing to impose sanctions in the coming days on a number of Lebanese security and military officials, amid mounting pressure on Beirut to bring Hezbollah’s weapons under State control and growing U.S. dissatisfaction with the handling of an explosives shipment seized in Dahr al-Baydar, according to information obtained exclusively by Nidaa Al-Watan.

Sources told the newspaper that Washington was particularly displeased with what it viewed as an effort to keep the case under wraps for several days before it was publicly disclosed. U.S. officials were also reportedly frustrated that the shipment was discovered by chance rather than through proactive security operations.

The potential sanctions come as pressure mounts on the Lebanese State to address Hezbollah’s weapons and reinforce its authority over security matters. The Dahr al-Baydar case has added to U.S. concerns over how Lebanese authorities are handling issues linked to the group.
