The United States has warned several Gulf Arab countries to prepare for a “short, intense military campaign” against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections, as Washington and Israel prepare for the possibility of renewed military operations, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing people briefed on the discussions, the newspaper said the warnings were conveyed through diplomatic and military channels and reflected growing preparations for a new round of strikes aimed at weakening Iran’s capabilities and pressuring Tehran to negotiate.
U.S. President Donald Trump has not made a final decision but is leaning toward a major post-election attack that could target Iranian infrastructure and nuclear facilities, the report said, citing people familiar with his thinking.
The White House declined to comment on what it called “sensitive military plans that may or may not exist.”
“President Trump keeps all options on the table to ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” it said.
The Pentagon is moving additional military assets into the region as it prepares for the possibility of further strikes, according to the Journal.
The U.S. military is transferring a Patriot missile defense system from Texas to the Middle East and has relocated troops away from bases where they could be vulnerable to Iranian attacks, the report said, citing officials.
U.S. forces are also replenishing ammunition stocks and preparing bombers and fighter jets for potential operations. An additional aircraft carrier strike group and a Marine expeditionary unit are expected to join approximately 20 U.S. warships already in the region next month, the newspaper reported.
Israel has also drawn up plans and identified targets for a possible new attack, according to the report.
The preparations come amid renewed uncertainty over whether Washington will pursue a diplomatic agreement with Tehran or resume large-scale military action.
Last week, Trump said the United States could launch another “little Epic Fury,” referring to the U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign earlier this year, or Iran could agree to a deal.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas, on Tuesday, Trump hinted at further developments involving Iran in the coming weeks.
“You’ll see Iran in a couple of weeks, if you don’t mind,” he told the crowd.
Trump claimed that U.S. operations had destroyed Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities and defeated the country militarily and financially.
“We obliterated Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity with Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Epic Fury and defeated them militarily, financially and otherwise. And it will all end very soon,” he said.
“It could be over whenever I wanted it to be over,” he added.
Trump has previously said he would not attack Iran before the midterm elections, scheduled for Nov. 3. The reported preparations point to the possibility of a major escalation after the vote, although the president has yet to authorize a new attack.
