Working groups tasked with implementing the newly signed U.S.-brokered framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel are expected to resume meetings in the coming weeks to discuss the next phase of the process as part of a broader arrangement, a U.S. State Department official said.
In an interview with Sky News Arabia, the official said the agreement is designed to help Lebanon's internationally recognized government consolidate its authority and secure international backing.
"This framework agreement will enable Lebanon's legitimate government to mobilize the international support necessary to free itself once and for all from Hezbollah's domination and restore its sovereignty over the country," the official said.
The official said a security annex to the framework agreement, which is still being drafted, will set out the remaining details, including security arrangements and verification mechanisms. A coordination group with U.S. participation will oversee implementation of the agreement.
Describing the deal as a major diplomatic achievement, the official said it represents "a major new milestone in President Donald Trump's agenda for bringing peace to the Middle East" and called it "the most significant agreement between Israel and Lebanon since 1983."
According to the official, the framework establishes "a clear understanding based on reciprocal commitments between Israel and Lebanon," under which Israel will redeploy its forces from Lebanese territory in exchange for Hezbollah's disarmament and the restoration of the Lebanese state's full sovereignty across the country.
The official said implementation of the agreement is intended to achieve three principal objectives: restoring Lebanon's sovereignty, dismantling Hezbollah's terrorist infrastructure, and enabling Israel to return to secure borders once the threat has been eliminated.
The remarks came as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) commander Admiral Brad Cooper in Beirut on Monday to discuss preparations for launching implementation of the trilateral agreement approved in Washington earlier this week.
According to an official statement, the meeting focused on preparations for beginning implementation of the framework agreement reached through Lebanese-U.S.-Israeli negotiations in Washington.
The agreement provides for the establishment of two pilot zones that will include an Israeli military withdrawal, the deployment of the Lebanese Army, and the disarmament of armed groups operating outside state authority, most notably Hezbollah.
