The U.S. general in charge of American forces in the Middle East, Gen. Michael Kurilla, arrived in the region on Saturday as preparations continue for a potential Iranian attack on Israel in retaliation for the assassinations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, two U.S. officials told Axios.
Gen. Kurilla's visit was planned before the recent escalation between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah, but his trip has taken on added urgency.
A U.S. official noted that Kurilla is expected to use the visit to rally the same international and regional coalition that defended Israel against an Iranian attack on April 13. This coalition's efforts were pivotal in countering previous threats.
Three U.S. and Israeli officials anticipate that Iran could launch an attack on Israel as early as Monday.
Kurilla's itinerary includes visits to several Gulf countries, Jordan, and Israel.
Jordan, in particular, is a critical stop. During the April 13 attack, Jordan played a significant role by intercepting Iranian drones heading towards Israel and allowing U.S. and Israeli jets to use its airspace for defensive operations. The U.S. hopes Jordan will provide similar support if necessary.
