U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus has suggested expanding the mandate of the Cessation of Hostilities Monitoring Committee, also known as the “Mechanism Committee,” informed sources told Sky News Arabia on Wednesday.
Currently tasked with overseeing the Lebanese-Israeli border in the south, Ortagus proposed that the committee could monitor all Lebanese borders, not just the south. The move comes following reports from Israel alleging that Hezbollah has been smuggling weapons shipments across the Syrian border. Ortagus stressed that the U.S. has not independently verified these claims.
Ortagus is scheduled to attend a meeting of the Mechanism Committee in Naqoura, southern Lebanon, later on Wednesday. She is expected to travel there by helicopter from Beirut and return to the capital to conclude her visit.
Earlier in her visit, Ortagus discussed with Lebanese leaders the need to activate the committee’s work and also raised the possibility of expanding its membership to include civilian representatives, with Ortagus herself representing the U.S. civilian contingent.
The Mechanism Committee, chaired by a U.S. general and including France, Lebanon, Israel, and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), is responsible for implementing the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel that came into effect on November 27, 2024.
