The head of U.S. Central Command commended the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) for discovering a large Hezbollah tunnel network, marking the second such find in less than two months.
Admiral Brad Cooper said the latest operation underscores the Lebanese army’s growing efforts to dismantle infrastructure used by nonstate actors to conceal weapons and conduct military activities.
“Dismantling tunnels nefariously used by non-state actors to store ammunition, missiles and attack drones promotes peace and stability in Lebanon and across the region,” Cooper said in a statement issued on Monday. “Job well done by the LAF and the U.S.-led Mechanism team that is helping enforce commitments made by Israel and Lebanon.”
Earlier on Monday, Saudi-owned Al-Hadath television reported that the Lebanese army, acting on U.S. intelligence, had inspected a site in the Al-Halloussiyah area of southern Lebanon and uncovered a significant weapons cache.
Citing a senior U.S. official, the network said troops found 348 packages at the location, each containing 1,000 rounds of ammunition. The official described the find as evidence of Hezbollah’s continued stockpiling of arms despite ongoing international efforts to curb its military capabilities.
The same official said Washington is urging the Lebanese army to accelerate its efforts to disarm Hezbollah, stressing that the LAF has the capacity to conduct such operations both south and north of the Litani River simultaneously.
