UNIFIL Presses for Implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701

UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) has released a press statement outlining recent developments regarding the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, following an understanding between Israel and Lebanon.

The statement revealed that both Israel and Lebanon have recommitted to the full implementation of resolution 1701, marking a significant step toward regional stability.

UNIFIL urged both parties to utilize the newly established Mechanism, as agreed in the understanding, to address outstanding issues.

UNIFIL also reiterated its call for the timely withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the region.

The statement emphasized that the full implementation of resolution 1701 is essential as a comprehensive path toward peace.

In its statement, UNIFIL highlighted its ongoing collaboration with the LAF, particularly in support of their recruitment efforts and troop redeployment to the south. The mission reaffirmed its readiness to support both countries in meeting their obligations and to monitor progress on the ground.

The mission continues to focus on ensuring the area south of the Litani River remains free of any armed personnel, assets, or weapons other than those of the Lebanese Government and UNIFIL. It also stressed the importance of respecting the Blue Line.

Additionally, the statement raised concerns over the continued destruction caused by the Israeli army in residential areas, agricultural lands, and road networks in southern Lebanon, describing these actions as violations of resolution 1701.

UNIFIL peacekeepers will continue to carry out their mandated tasks, including monitoring and reporting violations of resolution 1701 to the UN Security Council.
