U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to prepare new options for military strikes against Iran, even as he says he will not resume attacks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, The New York Times reported.
The plans would target Iran’s drone and missile arsenals, energy infrastructure and other military sites, according to the newspaper, citing U.S. officials and people briefed on the discussions.
Three aircraft carriers are expected to be in the Middle East soon, in a major buildup of U.S. military forces as Washington prepares for the possibility of renewed combat operations.
Despite the preparations, Trump has repeatedly decided against launching major new attacks on Iran. In recent weeks, the U.S. military response has also been more restrained, even as Iran has stepped up attacks on oil tankers.
In a social media post on Thursday, Trump said the United States would not attack Iran before the midterm elections, adding that Washington and Tehran were “having productive discussions.”
But the possibility of renewed strikes remains under consideration. Senior national security officials, led by Vice President JD Vance, discussed a new proposal at Camp David last Friday, according to people briefed on the plan.
The proposal centers on a short, intense military campaign lasting about three days, The New York Times reported.
U.S. national security officials and the Pentagon have presented Trump with five proposals in recent months for major operations against either Iran or Yemen’s Houthi movement, an Iran-backed group. Trump rejected each of them, according to the report.
