Last week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced that Beirut would not forcibly disarm the Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah as part of its effort to gain a state monopoly on weapons. Instead, Aoun said Hezbollah would be convinced to give up its arms on its own, through dialogue and negotiations. Moreover, the president suggested the militia’s troops could then be integrated into the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). This approach, which avoids a potentially bloody face-off, will be unacceptable to both the US and Israel, and will ultimately undermine the hopeful progress Lebanon has made toward reasserting its sovereignty.

Last week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that “the decision has been taken” to give the state a monopoly over weapons in the country, albeit through dialogue and not force. The statement was directed primarily at Hezbollah and echoed the President’s inaugural address and the government’s policy statement, at a time when there is increasing pressure on Lebanon, from inside and outside, to disarm the group.

Former Chelsea forward Timo Werner is wanted by Manchester United, Sky Germany is reporting.
Werner is not satisfied with his situation at RB Leipzig - but the player's preference at this stage is to stay at least until next summer.
Sky Germany reports that Erik ten Hag's side have already enquired about Werner's availability, but no offer has been made and there have been no negotiations at this stage.
Werner - who is in Manchester this week as Leipzig face Champions League holders Man City at the Etihad - has previously been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but the LaLiga club have cooled their interest.
The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Leipzig in July 2020 for £45m but scored just 10 Premier League goals in 56 appearances before rejoining his former club.
Since returning to the Bundesliga for £25.3m in August 2022, Werner has scored 16 goals in his first season but has only managed to score twice in 13 games this term.
Werner has not featured for Germany this season since Julian Nagelsmann took over the helm, with his last appearance for the national team coming last summer in the Nations League.
The transfer window opens on Monday January 1, 2024 and will close at 11pm on Thursday 1 February, 2024.
To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL, DFL, Serie A, LaLiga, and LFP, who will all close their summer and winter windows on 1 September and 1 February respectively.
