The Voice star Kendji Girac has been shot in the chest by a crazed gunman during a horrifying attack in France.

The singer, who starred in The Voice France back in 2014, has been seriously injured after being fired at. His condition is still being described as "life-threatening" after being rushed to hospital as emergency services were called to the scene in the southwest of the country. A source said: "He was at a travelers’ camp where he was wounded by a firearm.

"Gendarmes were alerted at around 5.30 am, and when they arrived they were confronted by around 20 people who refused to communicate any information," they told the Sun. "The emergency services meanwhile evacuated a seriously wounded man who had been shot in the chest, and he was rushed to hospital."

The singer remains at University Hospital in Bordeaux and is said to be conscious as medics battle to save his life. It is not known if the 27-year-old was the target of the attack. He was wounded by the gunman in the early hours of Monday morning as he returned from Biscarrosse.

Police were seen searching the camp as their investigation into the shooting opened. The public prosecutor of Mont-de-Marsan Olivier Janson will head up the probe as detectives attempt to find out why the musician was attacked.

During his career, talented Kendji has worked with artists such as Mika. Since appearing on the talent show, he has released five albums and performed duets with other French stars like Vianney and Florent Pagny. In January 2021, he welcomed his daughter Eva Alba.
