Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani is expected to pay an official visit to Beirut on Thursday as part of a political initiative aimed at opening a new chapter in Syrian-Lebanese relations and supporting stability in Lebanon during its current political transition, Syrian diplomatic sources told Syria TV.
According to the sources, al-Shaibani will present a Syrian political initiative during his meetings with Lebanese officials that seeks to help the Lebanese state achieve a monopoly over arms through a consensual political process.
The proposal is intended to assist Lebanon in placing all weapons under state authority while avoiding internal confrontation or security divisions. The sources said the initiative reflects Damascus' belief that the issue should be addressed through dialogue and national consensus rather than through the imposition of faits accomplis that could trigger domestic unrest.
The sources added that al-Shaibani's meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is expected to be particularly significant.
The talks are set to focus on ways to ease domestic tensions and explore whether Syria, in coordination with Arab and regional partners, can help contain any unrest that may accompany the next phase of Lebanon's political transition.
According to the sources, the discussions will also examine efforts to prevent Lebanon from sliding into internal conflict amid ongoing regional developments.
