Erik ten Hag's Manchester United job hangs in the balance - and his fallings out with players won’t be helping his cause.
The Dutchman impressed during his first season at Old Trafford, winning the Carabao Cup. He could yet lift another trophy this term, with the Red Devils having reached the FA Cup semi-finals.
Despite his decent work on the pitch, Ten Hag’s relationships with some of his Man United stars has punctured his time so far - something that could come into Jim Ratcliffe’s thinking as he agonises over whether he should be finding a new manager. Ten Hag will be hoping that won’t be the case but the evidence is damning.
Some of those to have fallen out with the former Ajax coach have even gone on to quit the club shortly after. Here are some of the standout examples:
Arguably one of the best players in Man United’s long history, Ronaldo has left the club twice - but his most recent exit was certainly under a cloud. Him and Ten Hag publicly did not see eye-to-eye.
Their frosty relationship came to a head after the Portuguese’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan. Asked if he was being forced out at the time, Ronaldo said: "Yes. Not only the coach, but the other two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed."
The interview did not go down well with the club hierarchy, who consequently cancelled the remainder of his contract. Ronaldo went on to pen a record-breaking deal with Saudi side Al-Nassr.
It hasn’t quite all gone to plan for the veteran in the Gulf state. Despite his stunning goalscoring record, there have been a number of run-ins - the latest being an elbow that saw him sent off.
Like his former Old Trafford team-mate Jadon Sancho was at the centre of a similarly explosive, public row. Big things were expected of the winger following his mega-money arrival from Borussia Dortmund.
Just 12 goals later, and Sancho was gone. The pair’s relationship started to collapse after Ten Hag called out the winger’s perceived lack of effort in training - an allegation that Sancho denied.
Naturally, Ten Hag wanted an apology. But that was not forthcoming. Sancho was exiled from the first-team, failing to make another appearance for the club.
He has attempted to get his career back on track with a loan move to former club Borussia Dortmund but has scored just twice. Sancho could be in line for an awkward conversation this summer should he return to Old Trafford.
While Ronaldo and Sancho were given ample opportunities during their stints at Old Trafford, the same cannot be said of a few academy stars. The first of which is James Garner.
A talented midfielder, Garner joined the Red Devils’ youth set-up at seven years old. He had made only fleeting appearances before Ten Hag’s arrival.
Garner has not chosen to criticise the Dutchman directly but did reveal that he was told in no uncertain terms where his future lied. He said: "My talk with him was easy. I asked him plain and simple whether I was going to be in the squad or if he saw me playing a part. I felt the conversation did not go as well as I wanted and I made the decision to move."
Garner was not the only academy graduate who was shown the door by Ten Hag. Following a successful spell with Sheffield United, goalkeeper Henderson was left frustrated by his lack of opportunities at Old Trafford.
He was keen for an exit and barely spoke a word to Ten Hag before joining Nottingham Forest - once again on loan. Speaking at the time, Henderson said: "I didn't want the manager to come in and be able to see me in training.
"I knew he'd probably want to keep me, so I tried to do it all before I left for the season. I told the hierarchy I need to go and play football, I don't want to be here playing second fiddle.
"It was all planned out. I was almost gone before the manager came through the door and I haven't spoken to him since.”
Henderson was not the only one to go down the silent treatment route with Ten Hag. Brazilian playmaker Andreas Pereira also did the same as he attempted to force an exit.
He also hinted at not feeling fully appreciated at Old Trafford by his new manager. Speaking before moving permanently to Fulham, he said: "I didn't speak with Ten Hag.
"I know him because I worked with him at PSV but I was determined in my head and maybe if I spoke with the manager again I would stay.
"In my head I was thinking 'I need to go, I need to feel confident and play' and that's what I did. At United I had a lot of memories; good memories, bad memories. It's been 10 years at the club. I arrived when I was 16 so, you know, a young boy. It was an amazing ride but I got to the stage where I thought maybe it was best not to stay.
"I wanted to feel more loved and I wanted to play every game. What Fulham offered me and what [manager] Marco [Silva] offered me, it was the perfect opportunity."
It’s a very familiar theme of young players not getting chances - and the same could be said of young forward Pellistri. His agent had claimed that it would be “difficult” for the youngster to play under Ten Hag.
He has since moved on with a loan move to Spanish side Granada. Pellistri has said that it is difficult to predict Ten Hag’s moves when it comes to his side.
He said: "Although I had minutes at Manchester United, it was not the amount I would like given the moment I was in. I am very happy for the minutes I played here.
"A player always wants to play, many times one does not put oneself into the manager's decisions, who has to think about many more things. Many times the player does not know what the coach is thinking or why he makes the decisions he makes.”
