The start of the trial of the Ayyash case at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon has been canceled due to insufficient funding, the STL announced Thursday, a day after the court revealed its critical financial state.

The opening of the trial, due to begin in two weeks’ time, was ordered by Trial Chamber II to be canceled along with the suspension of all related decisions on court filings until further notice.

The decision follows STL’s statement Wednesday that warned of the court’s inability to operate beyond July unless further funding can be secured.

“The imminent exhaustion of funds will impact the tribunal’s ability to finance the continuation of judicial proceedings and completion of its mandate unless further contributions are forthcoming this month” the statement said.
