Interior Minister Warns Against Using Terrorist Crime for Sectarian, Political Purposes

Interior Minister Raya Hassan on Friday deemed it as dangerous to take advantage of a terrorist crime so as to incite sectarianism and use it for political purposes, saying that whoever commits a criminal act cannot be a mentally-balanced person.

“Security agencies are in charge of the probe into the Tripoli attack, and they are doing everything that it takes to reveal what happened in a professional way, under the supervision and upon the instructions of the competent judicial authorities,” Hassan said following an emergency meeting with top security officials.

“Judicial proceedings in terrorism-related cases are often carried out under the supervision of the State commissioner to the Military Court,” she explained, adding that the state of law can be fortified by unifying political stances and boosting coordination between security agencies.

The minister provided details on the terrorist attack that jolted Tripoli on Monday evening, saying that the attacker, Abdul-Rahman Mabsout, had left his house on a motorcycle carrying six explosives and a machine gun.

Mabsout hurled a grenade at the Tripoli’s Serail, before shooting two policemen and a soldier dead.

The assailant then fled to the roof of a residential building, where he tossed a grenade and opened fire on military soldiers, killing one.

Later, Mabsout went down to the fourth floor of the building, where security forces hit the bomb he was trying to throw at them.
