South Korea is set to introduce on Friday the world’s first 5G mobile internet on a nationwide scale, thus enabling users to download data 20 times faster than existing 4G.
The service will allow users to watch streaming videos faster, to stream games without delay and download entire movies in few seconds; but, in order to use it the user must have 5G-enabled devices, with the upcoming Samsung S10 likely to be a popular choice in the tech-savvy country.
“It is meaningful that South Korean telecom companies are providing services and networks meeting South Korean customers' high standard in speed and picture quality,” executive vice president at the country's top mobile carrier SK Telecom, Ryu Young-sang, said.
Young-sang explained that South Korea Telecom is collaborating with its memory-chip making affiliate, SK Hynix, to build a highly digitized and connected factory powered by 5G technology as the operator anticipates about one million 5G customers by end-2019.
“I don't think we have a security issue in South Korea,” head of SK Telecom's information and communication tech research centre, Park Jin-hyo, told reporters, adding that the company’s progressive wireless technology does not allow eavesdropping or hacking into 5G networks.
The U.S. carriers had launched the 5G service in December last year, but it service was available in 12 cities only.
