Saudi Foreign Minister Cancels Lebanon Visit, Dispatches Advisor to Discuss Presidential Election

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has canceled his planned visit to Lebanon, Al-Modon reported on Thursday.

Instead, his advisor for Lebanese affairs, Yazid bin Farhan, will represent him during the visit, which will focus on the upcoming presidential election. The Saudi envoy will be hearing the positions of Lebanese political factions and their approaches to the presidential race.

Sources indicate that Saudi Arabia's position remains clear: it does not intend to interfere in the details of Lebanon's presidential race. Riyadh, however, will stress the importance of a Lebanese consensus on a presidential candidate who aligns with the aspirations of the international community and the Quintet Committee.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan had originally planned to visit Lebanon later this week to meet with Lebanese leaders. However, the diplomatic shift now sees his advisor taking over the mission. This change follows a recent visit to Riyadh by Lebanese Forces MP Pierre Bou Assi, who met with Saudi officials to discuss the presidential election. Bou Assi's trip followed a visit by Lebanese Army Commander General Joseph Aoun to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman to explore ways to support Lebanon’s military. The timing of Aoun's visit also carried political and presidential significance.

Meanwhile, Lebanon is also anticipating a visit by U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, scheduled for next Monday. His visit will primarily focus on discussions regarding the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the ongoing presidential election process.
