Sassine Sassine, an advisor to the Kataeb leader, emphasized the party’s dedication to uncovering the truth behind the 2020 Beirut port explosion, blaming judicial decay for the lingering unaccountability.
In an interview on LBCI, Sassine criticized the government's handling of the investigation, arguing that a state that respects its citizens and sympathizes with the suffering of the victims’ families would not allow delays and probe obstruction under illogical and illegal pretexts.
He expressed frustration that political interference has stalled the investigation led by Judge Tarek Bitar, emphasizing that this obstruction has prevented the judiciary from fulfilling its role. "Sadly, the judiciary is politicized because politics has a dominant hand in judicial appointments," he pointed out.
"The failure to provide satellite images does not justify halting the investigation," he added. "The Kataeb Party has tasked former Bar Association President George Greige to follow up on the matter, maintaining constant communication with Judge Bitar. We are committed to resuming the investigations because they are crucial for the integrity of Lebanon,” Sassine stressed. “We hope Judge Jamal Hajjar will do whatever is legally necessary to enable Judge Bitar to carry on his probe. What matters to us is that Judge Bitar would be the one resuming investigations, as he holds the key evidence and information."
Sassine slammed Hezbollah for dragging Lebanon into a war that the Lebanese did not want to be part of, cautioning against crossing red lines that could lead to unpredictable outcomes. "Iran's unilateral decisions have devastating consequences for our country, which is already economically shattered."
“What outcome have we achieved through the ongoing conflict in South Lebanon?” he asked. “Arrogance is ruining the country.”
"Why does Iran use Lebanon instead of engaging directly in this confrontation? Is Lebanon a 'no man's land' where no one has a say except Hezbollah? Why does Hezbollah keep monopolizing the decision-making power in Lebanon where the majority does not want war? An entire generation, from all sects, is fleeing because it has lost faith in the country's politics. Isn’t this the result of the state’s collapse due to unwanted wars?"
He confirmed that no one is prepared for war, even Hezbollah's supporters, saying that the party does not care about Lebanon’s interests knowing that it has a strategic agenda to execute at Iran’s behest.
Sassine emphasized that resolving the conflict requires securing Lebanon's borders, which entails having the Lebanese Army take control of southern Lebanon. He stressed the need to implement international resolutions, including Resolution 1701 and Resolution 1559, which mandate that all unauthorized weapons be controlled by security and military institutions, specifically the army.
"UN Security Council Resolution 1701 cannot be implemented without also enforcing Resolutions 1559 and 1680," he emphasized. "Lebanon needs stable and secure borders, and this is the responsibility of the military forces, particularly the army, which is one of the best in the region. However, it lacks the necessary political support, which has been undermined."
He argued that the state is responsible for implementing international resolutions, highlighting that Hezbollah must comply with Resolution 1559 and that it is Israel's duty not to violate Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Sassine stressed that the Kataeb Party is striving to unite the opposition, noting that MP Samy Gemayel is diligently seeking to give the opposition a strong and influential voice in the international community. "We are continuously working to form an opposition group. We believe that the country can only progress through strong political stances and actions," he said.
"We are the ones who need guarantees from Hezbollah. It is the one controlling the state, usurping its decision-making power, holding the reins of public institutions, and possessing weapons.”
