Sassine Warns Against Lebanon Paying the Price for Any Settlement with Iran

Kataeb Leader Political Advisor Sassine Sassine confirmed that "in U.S. politics, there is an administration that sets future political plans, and President Trump himself does not take instructions from the administration regarding his foreign and domestic policies. We might witness some surprises in his policies, which are different from the usual U.S. stance, due to his progressive positions."

Sassine stated, "We do not fully understand the details of the peace plan and the cessation of wars. We hope that these plans are not at Lebanon's expense, as we fear the 'bazaars' being carried out by countries at the expense of our nation. For instance, the 'bazaar' that occurred due to the Syrian army's involvement in the Iraq War, where Syria was tasked with managing Lebanon, just as in 2000 when the Israeli army withdrew from the south and handed control to Hezbollah in exchange for the party’s guarantee of the Israeli border."

Sassine remarks came during an interview with Voice of Lebanon.

He added, "We are concerned about the repetition of this type of 'bazaar,' where Lebanon pays the price for any settlement with Iran to guarantee the protection of the Israeli borders by handing over the Lebanese file to Iran. This is being discussed about the partial implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701, the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters to the north of the Litani River, and the placement of their weapons inside Lebanon."

Regarding Trump's message to the Lebanese,  Sassine believed that no great hopes could be placed on this paper, as it is merely a statement of intentions to end the war in the region. However, these intentions require counter-intentions to be realized. Israel, too, must demonstrate its intent to end its war.

He pointed out that Iran did not favor Trump's election and if the reports about attempts on his life are true, it will have severe consequences for Iranian-American relations, particularly for Iran itself.

On the tour of the Kataeb Leader in France,  Sassine explained that MP Samy Gemayel's meetings with French and international officials are not new; he began them at the start of the war to express the fears of the Lebanese, which have now become a reality.

He noted that these extensive meetings with the French administration at all levels, as well as with Members of the European Parliament, revolve around two key issues: the first is how to save Lebanon, restore state authority, and implement UNSC Resolution 1701 in all its aspects; the second is the swift election of a president to restore political order and public institutions, in addition to his repeated calls to end the war on Lebanon. This is the roadmap proposed by the Kataeb Party.

Sassine said, "MP Gemayel warned influential decision-makers in the region that we will not accept Lebanon being a gift to any country. The Lebanon we want asserts control over all its territory and protects its sovereignty without any tutelage, dominance, or occupation."

He affirmed that "the amount of weapons stored in Lebanon proves that the country is occupied by Iran, as it is responsible for the presence of these weapons. This indicates that Iran controls Lebanon's decision-making and does whatever it pleases inside Lebanon without accountability."

He added, "There is a political group in Lebanon that does not have decision-making power and takes orders from a foreign country. Therefore, we cannot achieve Lebanese consensus on the roadmap we propose to exit the current crisis, but the Kataeb Party remains committed to the belief in a state that guarantees the rights of all Lebanese."

Sassine continued, "The policy of the other side contradicts our principles, as it is not national but serves the interests of foreign countries."

Regarding Naim Qassem's attack on the Lebanese Army, he asked, "By what authority does Qassem address the army? Has Hezbollah allowed the Lebanese Army to carry out its duties? On the contrary, it has always been the cause of hindering the army's role in the south and all areas."

He said, "The Lebanese Army carries out its duties according to the Lebanese Constitution and is not obligated to address Naim Qassem or provide him with information about its investigations. Hezbollah has crossed the line, considering that all matters are open to it."

Sassine considered that "the battle proved that Hezbollah did not live up to expectations and achieved no results," asking, "Where is the victory amidst the destruction and displacement?"

He said, "A national decision from Hezbollah is required to hand over the fronts to the Lebanese Army."

Sassine emphasized that no one is above the state, and history has proven this. The problem lies in the implementation of the Taif Agreement, as the Syrian occupation aimed to displace Christian leaders in order to dominate internal decision-making.

He called on Hezbollah to return to its Lebanese identity and to free itself from Iranian influence and decision-making, which it uses for its own international relations.

He concluded, saying, "Hezbollah has been harmed and can no longer persist in denial."
