It is trying to balance the demands of the US to disarm Hezbollah, a militia and political party controlling much of the country, against those of Iran, Hezbollah’s main sponsor, to do no such thing. The Lebanese government’s decision last Thursday to endorse the objectives of a US-drafted plan provoked a negative response from Hezbollah and, to an extent, its ally within the Shiite community, the Amal Movement. However, the two parties, realising the risk of isolating themselves further, did not withdraw their ministers from the government of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

Salam: Cabinet Welcomed Army Plan to Consolidate Weapons Across Lebanon
Lebanon’s Cabinet on Friday welcomed the army's plan to place all weapons under State control across the country, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced following the government session.
“In the Cabinet, we welcomed the army’s plan to consolidate all weapons across Lebanese territory and to implement it within the framework set during the August 5, 2025 session,” Salam wrote on X.
The Cabinet also decided to require the army command to submit monthly reports on progress in carrying out the plan, he added.
