Iran's Quds Force Commander Esmail Qaani is reportedly alive and currently under investigation in Tehran following Israeli airstrikes in Beirut that targeted senior Hezbollah figures, according to media reports on Thursday.
The reports suggest that Iranian authorities are conducting an internal investigation into possible security breaches, with sources from Beirut, Baghdad, and Tehran indicating that Qaani and his team are being held in isolation while under scrutiny. These sources, cited by the Middle East Eye, reveal that the Iranian government is deeply concerned about potential infiltration within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), particularly among operatives working in the Lebanese arena.
“The Iranians have serious suspicions that the Israelis have infiltrated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, especially those working in the Lebanese arena, so everyone is currently under investigation,” a source told the Middle East Eye.
Sky News Arabia also reported on Thursday that Qaani may have suffered a heart attack during his interrogation and has been consequently hospitalized. Iranian sources told Sky News that Qaani is suspected of spying for Israel.
Qaani's whereabouts have been the subject of intense speculation since the Israeli strike, which claimed the life of Hashem Safieddine, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah's presumed successor. Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Qaani had traveled to Lebanon after the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a separate Israeli airstrike last month, but contact with him has been lost since the Beirut attack.
