Israeli special forces have conducted several small-scale raids into Hezbollah's tunnel network along the Lebanese border in recent months, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
These targeted incursions are reportedly a prelude to a potential larger ground operation, which could occur as soon as this week. However, the report noted that the timing of such an incursion remains uncertain due to pressure from the United States urging Israel to hold off on a full-scale ground assault.
Instead of launching a widespread ground offensive, the Israeli army may opt for more extensive raids into Lebanon to disrupt Hezbollah’s operations, the report said.
The raids target Hezbollah’s extensive tunnel system, which stretches several hundred kilometers along the border, according to underground warfare expert Tal Beeri. While Hezbollah has constructed tunnels that penetrate into Israeli territory, the Israeli army exposed and destroyed those tactical tunnels during the 2019 Operation Northern Shield.
The report highlighted ongoing strategic preparations as Israel seeks to counter Hezbollah's entrenched positions along the border while balancing international diplomatic concerns.
